Tonga hotel properties are very low key. There are only five up market beach resorts in Tonga, the largest of these having just 26 bungalows. The most up-market resort in Tonga is on Fafa Island off Tongatapu offering 16 traditional style fales (bungalows). Nuku'alofa, the capital, has several large hotels (over 50 rooms) and plenty of guest houses and budget style motels, most of which are found across the road from the harbour wall. The only accommodation on Tongatapu outside Nuku'alofa is a handful of budget motels and backpacker hostels on the west tip of the island around Ha'atafu Beach and Kolovai, and the run down resort at Keleti on the south coast. A new Chinese funded hotel is under construction opposite the airport in a very ordinary inland setting.
Expect to pay T$10 for a dorm bed, T$30 for a budget room and T$150 for an up-market beach bungalow. Hotel rooms are cheaper at around T$70 per night.
The Ha'apai group is even more low key with just a handful of guesthouses on Lifuka and an up-market small resort on adjacent Foa Island.
The popular Vava'u Group has the most accommodation options, with several small beach resorts including Mounu Resort on a tiny palm fringed coral island. Neiafu Town, the main centre of the group has lots of guesthouses, motels, backpacker hostels and the 50-room Paradise International Hotel overlooking Neiafu Harbour.
The remote Niuas has a single up-market retreat for those looking for a true escape from the world and a single budget family run guesthouse in the village.
