Tonga uses its own dollar and cent monetary system, the Tongan Pa'anga. There are several international banks in the country including Westpac, ANZ and the local Bank of Tonga. Banks are open from 9.00am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday in Nuku'alofa (Tongatapu), Pangai (Ha'apai) and Neiafu (Vava'u). ATM cash withdrawal machines are available in Nuku'alofa Town and in Neiafu Town in Vavau, but not at the Fua'amotu International Airport. There are several currecy exchange counters at Fua'amotu Airport whjich open for all international flights.
Travellers cheques and credit cards are accepted by the larger hotels but most guest houses accept only cash.
There is a sales tax of 5% on all goods and services and a room tax of 2.5% on tourist accommodation. Please check whether the price quoted to you includes the tax or not.
